Wiltshire+Dimas played a key role in coordinating the third seminar of the Murru waaruu (On Track) Seminar Series, a project they were enthusiastic about undertaking for the Australian National University’s First Nations Portfolio. The seminar, titled ‘The imperative for dhalang-girr (a new way) Part 1: What has the policy of the past 235 years cost Australia and its First Nations people?’, drew delegates from across the nation, making it a significant and influential event.
The Murru waaruu (On Track) Economic Development Series is presented by the First Nations Portfolio – a branch of the ANU Executive – throughout 2023. It aims to empower First Nations Australians economically, through a program of six evidence-based seminars that build on the success of the 2022 Marramarra murru (Creating Pathways) Economic Development Wealth Forum and Symposium.
Seminar Three, held on 14 June 2023, focused on the cost of past policies on First Nations communities and the nation. The seminar emphasised evidence-based insights and restorative justice perspectives for policy change.
The featured keynote speakers included Professor Peter Yu AM, Dr Boyd Hunter, Ben Ainsworth (Director- First nations Policy Unit, Commonwealth Treasury, Dr Ryan Presley (contemporary First Nations artist) and a discussion panel featuring Fiona Jose (CEO, Cape York Partnership), Aidan Hartshorn (Associate Lecturer, ANU School of Art and Design), Bardy McFarlane (Consultant), Susan Bergersen (Executive–Strategic Projects, Banjima Native Title Aboriginal Corporation).
Delegates at the one-day seminar examined the question ‘What has the policy of the past 235 years cost Australia and its First Nations people?’
