Wiltshire+Dimas had a pivotal role in organising the fifth seminar of the Murru waaruu (On Track) Seminar Series, a project undertaken for the Australian National University’s influential First Nations Portfolio. The seminar, titled ‘Niiringal (the day after) Implementation of Uluru Part 3: Establishing the right economic development framework’, attracted participants from across Australia, solidifying its significance and impact.
The Murru waaruu (On Track) Economic Development Series is presented by the First Nations Portfolio – a branch of the ANU Executive – throughout 2023. It aims to empower First Nations Australians economically, through a program of six evidence-based seminars that build on the success of the 2022 Marramarra murru (Creating Pathways) Economic Development Wealth Forum and Symposium.
Seminar Five, held across two days on 3 and 4 October 2023, focused on identifying and prioritising reforms necessary across legislation and programmes to best support and foster First Nations economic self-determination.
On the evening of Tuesday, 3 October, a dinner function was held at the Shine Dome at the Australian Academy of Science, with a Keynote Address by Justin Mohamed, Ambassador for First Nations People, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade examining Australia’s Opportunities in International First Nations Trade. Jye Cole Hopkins, a Luritja and Warumunga man residing on Ngunnawal and Ngambri country, delivered a stirring musical performance.
The invitation-only delegates participated in sessions that examined: core legislative reform: implementation of UNDRIP and National treaty and settlement framework; reforming land rights; reforming water rights; reforming sea country rights; reforming cultural and intellectual property rights; and investing financial assets in economic self-determination.
