Sydney Harbour Bridge 90 Years

Project Info

The Sydney we know today would not be the same without its skyline being graced by the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in March 2022. aMBUSH Gallery (an initiative of Wiltshire + Dimas Management) were proud to partner with Transport for NSW for a city-wide activation celebrating this remarkable milestone.

A large-scale pop-up gallery exhibition (spanning the Sydney CBD and across to the north-side of the Bridge at Milsons Point and North Sydney Stations) was curated and produced by aMBUSH, and showcased a diverse range of photographs taken over the long and illustrious history of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The project captured important moments from construction to opening celebrations and other significant events including the Walk for Reconciliation in 2000, as well as present day celebrations of the hundred-plus maintenance staff who ensure the bridge continues to serve the community.

The exhibition involved collaboration with major institutions and organisations including the Powerhouse Museum, State Library of NSW, State Library of South Australia, NSW State Archives, City of Sydney and Fairfax Media for the curation of archival photography and historical information, as well as the commissioning of local artists including Reg Mombassa and Dean Sewell.

The project also featured stunning artwork projections highlighting what the bridge represents; a unifying presence linking Gadigal and Cammeraygal lands, beneath our sky and above our harbour. These artworks were created by First Nations artists living and working on Gadigal land – Jodie Austin and Kiara Rodriguez-Hextal – and were curated and produced by Ample Projects.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge 90th Anniversary project was curated and produced by aMBUSH Gallery and presented by Transport for NSW.
