For NAIDOC Week 2024, internationally acclaimed Aboriginal artist A. Professor Wayne Quilliam transformed the atrium of Quay Quarter with a visually striking exhibition titled ‘Winds of Fire, Eternal Light’.
Responding to the 2024 NAIDOC theme ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’, Quilliam created three monumental artworks, each measuring 8 metres long by 3 metres wide. These pieces, printed on sheer material, cascaded from the office spaces down into the retail area, creating a stunning interplay of light and shadow.
The artworks featured a masterful use of colours – blue, earthy reds and browns, white, black, and grey tones – speaking to the elemental forces that have shaped the land and its peoples for millennia. Quilliam’s works explored the boundaries between the physical and the intangible, offering a meditation on hope, passion, love, and resilience.
‘Winds of Fire, Eternal Light’ paid homage to Elders and ancestors while celebrating contemporary Indigenous culture. The exhibition transformed the Quay Quarter atrium into a living canvas of Indigenous storytelling and cultural homage.
The activation was curated and produced by aMBUSH Gallery (an initiative of Wiltshire + Dimas Management) and presented by Quay Quarter, offering visitors a unique opportunity to engage with Indigenous perspectives and stories in the heart of Sydney.
