Bahloo and Bila at Liberty Place

Project Info

A stunning collection of works by A.Professor Wayne Quilliam, one of Australia’s most prominent Aboriginal artists, brightened the area around 242 Pitt Street and 161 Castlereagh Street in Sydney’s CBD.

The project was a collaboration between Liberty Place/JLL, Icon Project Management, Buildcorp, and aMBUSH Gallery (an initiative of Wiltshire + Dimas Management), aiming to transform public spaces into vibrant showcases for art.

Using over two dozen images from his digital photography collection, Quilliam blended Indigenous rituals with the beauty of nature, offering a unique perspective that was both cultural and spiritual. The artworks combined traditional stories with mythological themes, exploring deeper questions of existence.

Quilliam’s art incorporated authentic colours and bold detailing, creating intricate and dynamic compositions that encouraged viewers to discover hidden stories. The arrangement of shapes and colours provided a visual journey, drawing the audience into a harmonious relationship with the natural environment.

His inspiration came from the sky, specifically the timeless chase between Bahloo the Moon and Bila the Sun across the horizon. Through his work, Quilliam captured the ever-changing play of light over the landscape, resulting in vibrant hues that reflected the world’s constant evolution.

The installations were on display for the public to enjoy, with a footprint spanning approximately 100 metres on Pitt Street and over 200 metres on Castlereagh Street. The Pitt Street installation was part of the City of Sydney’s public art program on hoardings, a bespoke project curated and produced by aMBUSH Gallery. The project also featured branded signage solutions to counter the disruption caused by the hoarding and redevelopment structures around the precinct.

This project also represented a synergistic partnership between aMBUSH Gallery and Wayne Quilliam, marking years of successful collaboration on significant artistic projects across Australia.

This community-focused initiative brought life and energy to the construction zone around the buildings, providing a free and accessible art experience for all visitors and workers in the area. The installation was set to remain on display for two years, offering Sydneysiders a unique and captivating art experience.
